Knowing the music

I would be richer than Bill Gates if I got a penny every time I thought I KILLED a lick or fill only to listen to the recording and walk away with my tail between my legs...

Point being, what we "hear" in our heads of what we're playing compared to what we're "really" playing as captured on a recording can be very differnent, and a very humbling experience. I am humbled constantly.

Me too Danny. At my gig tonight, the bandleader brought along a copy of a CD we're putting together,( just promotional stuff, covers), and listening to it, I was like, "fuck, I wanna do that all again, I'm rubbish, my timing is all over the place " [img]graemlins/cry.gif[/img] I know others often say it's fine, but we drummers always notice the mistakes, and I for one, don't really believe what others tell me until I'm convinced myself. I'm my toughest critic.

Still, where I felt depressed enough not to want to play the gig after hearing that, I remembered the thread about moeller, and playing like that made me forget everything, and it was fun. I just wish I used moeller when I made that damn recording. Oh well, we have a few more tracks to put down, so there's hope yet. I am recording myself as regularly as possible, and it's painful, but necessary.

Good point Danny. The version of 'Crying' I had to record required me playing virtually nothing except a slown rim rock pattern, but musically speaking, that was what was required. Anything else would have killed it, expecially as they were overdubbing lush strings as I left.
That video of Vinnie on Leno that Shedder posted is a good example of someone simply 'playing the music'

It is a true sign of maturing as a drummer when we see ourselves as an integral part of the band and the adhesive for the band. Its important to realize that all of the textures and nuances that we bring to a performance through our instrument many times must be subtle and supplemental to the particular piece that is being performed. Case in point Vinnies' performance was just perfect with Keith Urban. I can't imagine what more he could have done. His brush work was really wonderful and tastfully done.PT.
